17/02/2004 – Byron Bay
A party night at the Cheeky Monkeys
From Sydney I took the night bus to Byron Bay. On the first evening the backpackers organized a BBQ at the beach, from where you can walk up the hill to a lighthouse nearby. Also on the must-do-list is the bar Cheeky Monkeys, the most famous bar in Byron Bay and one you shouldn't miss if you are backpacking in Australia. I saved it for my second night though.
19/02/2004 – Surfers Paradise
Where every day is a good day to go surfing
A visit to Dreamworld. After half of a day of riding rollercoasters , I went back to the backpackers to chill out for a while before partying with some of my room mates in a Club till late.
21/02/2004 – Noosa
No koalas in Noosa
When I was told that you can see wild koalas in the National Park in Noosa, I went looking for them straight away. Unfortunately I couldn't find a single one of them but I really enjoyed a nice swim in the sea at Alexandria Bay.
23/02/2004 – Fraser Island Safari
Probably the biggest sand pit in the world
Three days unguided safari in a 4WD with a few tents on the biggest sand island in the world. Our group of eleven travellers used the time for swimming in the waters of Eli Creek, camping at Indian Head, splashing in the so-called Champagne Pools, visiting different coloured sand dunes and a ship wreck, camping near Lake Birrabeen without permission and swimming in the clear water of Lake McKenzie. Time went way too fast and after three eventful days the ferry took us back to Hervey Bay.
27/02/2004 – Whitsunday Island Sailing
Everyone on board! Lets go sailing
I was really looking forward to sailing to the Whitsunday Islands and on the long drive from Hervey Bay to Airlie Beach I couldn't think about anything else. In the morning of February, 27 it was finally time to go on board the catamaran "Jade" which took us to Long Island where we stayed for the first night.
