19/08/2004 – Mataranka
Hot springs, fruit bats and a lot of crazy people
Finally on the way to Alice Springs. A short stop at Cutta Cutta Caves which weren't worth the money. We put up the tent in Mataranka which is known for its hot springs and fruit bats. You can see (and smell) the bats in every tree around the hot springs.
21/08/2004 – Alice Springs
The devil must be hugh to play with those marbles
After a night in Tennant Creek, we got closer to our destination. We stopped at the Devil's Marbles, some hugh round rocks in the middle of nowhere! The rest of the day was spend in Alice Springs, relaxing and planning our trip to Ayers Rock (Uluru).
23/08/2004 – Kings Canyon
Danger! Stay away from the edges!
Following a bumpy road we drove to Kings Canyon. On the way we saw some wild camels and I was surprised that the landscape wasn't as barren as I thought it would be. There were lots of green bushes and some flowers as well.
24/08/2004 – Ayers Rock / The Olgas
Uluru at sunrise, from the top, from behind and at sunset
If you want to be at Ayers Rock just before sunrise, you have to get up very early but believe me, it's well worth it. Todays next activity was climbing Uluru. The path leading up to the top is extremely steep however you get a perfect view and I even got a first glimpse of the Olgas in the distance. Took some quick photos and back down. And then? A walk all around Ayers Rock (10km). After that, Oto and I got really tired because of the heat, so we decided to have a short nap in the car before continueing our trip to the Olgas. The name "Valley of the winds" sounded very promissing and luckily we weren't disappointed. I enjoyed the cool brise in my face a lot while walking through the Olgas. From there we drove back to Uluru, just in time for a lovely sunset (a few clounds spoiled it a bit but still - it was great!).
25/08/2004 – Alice Springs
Just being lazy
A whole day of relaxing from yesterdays strain and tomorrow I'll take the bus back to Katherine.
